Superintendent Dr. David J. Peterson's October Letter

Dear Scottsdale Unified School District Family,

Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is truly fortunate to have outstanding students, teachers and support staff as well as specialized programs that make us stand out across Arizona and the nation. It is only the end of the first quarter, and our students and teachers have already accomplished so much! See the October Letter.

DCES CUB NEWS!
2 SUSD NEA Master Teachers Create Lessons Plans Used Across the Nation
From New York to Oregon, K-12 teachers across the country are using lesson plans aligned to the Common Core that were created by 130 Master Teachers with the National Education Association (NEA), including two Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) teachers.

Cathy Skinner, a 5th grade National Board Certified teacher at Redfield Elementary School, and Heather Robinson, a 5th grade teacher and 2006 Arizona History Teacher of the Year at Desert Canyon Elementary School, are two of 130 teachers across the country selected as Master Teachers and to participate in the BetterLesson launch of http://betterlesson.com. BetterLesson brings together Master Teachers in grades K-12 Math and English Language Arts, like Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Robinson, to create and share classroom-ready lessons that are easily accessible and can be integrated into any curriculum. The Master Teachers also share reflections, real-life insight into what worked, what misfired and tips/tricks to successful Common Core implementation. See BetterLesson

Mrs. Daughetee's 4th Grade Class
The students have created an art project that will be decorating the Arizona State Fair’s Kiddie Corner. The boys & girls worked together to create colorful ladybugs & butterflies. Going to the fair, stop by the Kiddie Corner area to enjoy the artwork.

How do 5th graders in Mrs. Honeycutt’s class work on math problems?
We wrote on the desks! Yes, wrote on the desks with white board markers–ev eryone enjoyed this. We practiced dissecting a problem and problem solved using 5  boxes–what do we know, what strategies will we use, solve the problem, create a model and accurately answer the question using a complete sentence. No worries – everything is clean now!  Click here to some how much we enjoyed this. Just a different way to practice math.

What’s for Lunch?
