March 24 – Desert Canyon Elementary School Families
It is hard to believe that spring break has come and gone and that we are in the final trimester of the school year. Your children have been working diligently and I hope you had the opportunity to hear of their many accomplishments at the February parent/teacher conferences. Click here to keep reading.

AzMERIT Testing (Grades 3-5 only)
DCES will NOT be taking the AzMerit test online. The ADE inadvertently scheduled our school to take the AzMerit paper and pencil. The new testing schedule for grades 3-5 is
April 13 - Writing
April 14 - Reading and math part I
April 16 - Reading and math part II
Unfortunately there was a mix-up at the state level and we will adjust and create a testing environment conducive to our students' success. The efforts we made to prepare our students for testing online isn't in vain. Our teachers and students will be ahead of the game next year as we will be moving to online testing for AzMerit. If you have any questions please feel free to call Mr. Link or Mr. Achtziger.
Here are just a few tips to help your child when it comes to taking tests:
- Make sure that your child arrives at school on time. Late students will not be allowed to enter a classroom after a test has started.
- Encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and to ask questions about any directions that are unclear.
- See that your child gets the proper amount of sleep before the tests and is well-rested.
- Make sure that your child eats a nutritious breakfast on the day of the test. Hunger can detract from a good test performance. Students may bring water bottles to school as well. Thank you for encouraging your child to do his or her best!
As a staff we devote our expertise and time toward creating classroom assignments that ensure a balance for optimal teaching and learning. If you are returning to DCES for the 2015-16 school year, and would like input into your child's placement, forms will be available in the front office beginning Monday, March 30. Please return completed forms to the office by Friday, April 10.
NOT RETURNING TO DCES?
As the year comes to a close, we will be losing some of our DCES families. If you are certain your child(ren) WILL NOT be returning to DCES for the 2015-16 school year, or if your 5th grader WILL NOT be going on to Desert Canyon MIDDLE School in the 2015-16 year, please complete this form and return to the office or contact Catherine Langston at 480.484.1703.
