The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) will host a Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) Film Festival from 5-7 p.m. on April 30 at Coronado High School, 7501 E. Virginia Ave. Scottsdale 85257. See PBIS Film Festival
Band and strings will be offered to 5TH grade students at middle school campuses for the 2014-2015 school year. Band and strings classes will be scheduled during the first hour of the day at all middle schools (the hour before school begins at elementary schools). Students who enroll in band or strings will attend class at the middle school in their elementary school’s feeder pattern. Parents will have the option of dropping their child off at the middle school or having them ride the middle school bus to school. At the end of the period DCES students will walk over to the elementary school and proceed with their day. (For other elementary campuses a bus will be provided to transport students from their middle school back to their elementary school)
On April 11, 2014 the Governing Board voted unanimously to adopt a modified schedule for K-5 elementary schools that includes a Wednesday early release. This decision was made after the following data was provided to the Board:
• 15 out of 19 elementary school principals preferred the early release Wednesday to a shortened schedule (9 am- 3:10 pm) every day.
• With a 60% response rate of all elementary teachers in K-5 schools, 71% (263) of teachers prefer the early release Wednesday option.
• Of the 74 parent group leaders who responded, 44% prefer the early release Wednesday option while 56% prefer the shortened day option.
This decision is to accommodate the loss of half of the specials (art, music, PE) in elementary schools to help absorb the reduction of the M & O override. Next year the early release time will be at 1:00pm.
The K-5 elementary school schedule for 2014-2015 school year protects the integrity of instructional time for Language Arts, math, science, and social studies while at the same time accounting for the impact of lost teacher planning time through the reduction of elementary specials.

This program was established to provide a healthy alternative to celebrate your child’s birthday at DCES and add books to our school library.
Download the BBC form and your child will participate on their designated celebration date. When you have completed the form, return it with your donation to your child’s teacher. Checks should be made out to Desert Canyon PTO with the memo noted to Birthday Book Club (BBC).

April 8, 2014--------Desert Canyon Elementary School families,
DCES has been a busy place since our last letter. Teachers have been engaging students in rigorous lessons and activities as well as many exciting extra-curricular events. Thank you to our students and teachers for their entusiasm and persevereance in preparing for the AIMS or Stanford 10. Students in grades 2-5 will be finishing their state testing by the end of this week. Click here to keep reading.
SUSD will continue to offer exceptional, outstanding and FREE ALL DAY Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year. If you or someone you know will be enrolling a new student (K-5) for next year, please visit SUSD Centralized Enrollment
We look forward to welcoming our new DCES students this August.
AIMS & Stanford 10 Testing
During the week of April 7-10, students (grade 3-5) at DCES will be taking the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS). On April 8-10, Grade 2 students will be taking the Stanford 10 tests.
DCES WILL BE A CLOSED CAMPUS APRIL 7-10. WE WILL NOT HAVE PARENT VOLUNTEERS ON CAMPUS DURING THE MORNING HOURS OF TESTING.
Here are just a few tips to help your child when it comes to taking tests:
- Make sure that your child arrives at school on time. Late students will not be allowed to enter a classroom after a test has started.
- Encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and to ask questions about any directions that are unclear.
- See that your child gets the proper amount of sleep before the tests and is well-rested.
- Make sure that your child eats a nutritious breakfast on the day of the test. Hunger can detract from a good test performance. Students may bring water bottles to school as well. Thank you for encouraging your child to do his or her best!
